  • Can we learn about engorged breast that will shoot milk across the room?? I love the fact that noodad gives me terms and definitions that I can work with! :grin
  • Lansinoh: Breasts are made of skin, and repeated sucking can cause chafing, drying and cracking. Luckily, there\'s a cream called Lansinoh that eases the discomfort. And no, offering to lube the boob with the soothing salve is not a romantic gesture.

La Leche League--This breastfeeding information and support group offers free advice to nursing moms. If you hear women talking about \"The Breastfeeding Nazis\", this is the same group. Although they might come across as overzealous at times, it\'s tough to argue with an organization that touts the motto: \"Breast is Best.\" Amen, sisters!

Colostrum: When you\'re in the hospital with your newborn, you\'ll hear the nurses ask your wife if her milk has come in yet. \'What the hell has my kid been drinking for the last few days?\' you\'ll ask yourself--because you don\'t want to look ill-informed. What your kid has been chugging is colostrum. It\'s kind of a super concentrated vitamin-rich low fat milkshake-like liquid. Lucky for you, it also acts as a laxative! You\'ll be very familiar with the tell-tale seedy, mustard yellow plasma filling your kid\'s diapers.

    Good luck!
  • How do you decide the breast feeding your child is right for you and your son/daughter? It sounds like a good plan an helps keep your child(ren) healthy.:grin But from what I\'ve heard from other people is that its painful.:sigh Thats whats making me shy away from this option.
  • My limited experience/knowledge pans out thus: Breastfeeding is far and away better for babies than formula, in terms of health and nutrition. It is also cheaper and causes less smelly poop.
It may hurt at first: my wife struggled with breastfeeding at first, with some chafing, and trouble getting our baby to latch on correctly. You just have to make a commitment to stick w/it for a few weeks while you and the baby adjust. There are lots of organizations out there that will give as much free help as you could ever need with getting things right. The long-term benefits in terms of development are massive, so do your best for the baby\'s sake.
  • Tabby,

While it may not be the most comfortable feeling at first, it doesn\'t really hurt. It is a different sensation for sure, you will get use to it. Breastfeeding is so much better for the baby AND MOM! It releases endorphins and stuff to make Mom happy. Not having to get up to make a bottle at 3:00 AM is ALSO VERY HELPFUL!

My child is now 6 months old with 5 teeth and we are still going strong!

Good luck, you CAN do it!
  • I wish I didn't know those words when stumbling here, because then I would feel so proud now for learning so much interesting information. However, I am in possesion of breasts and having had two children, the terminology is all but imprinted on my brain forever.

Regarding breast vs. bottle, I prefere bottle feeding in all honesty. (not to say I didn't breastfeed for a wee while, as some is better than none.)

Bottle feeding = win, purely for the fact that the dad can be kicked out of bed to feed the baby while mum gets much needed (in my case) beauty sleep!
  • Nice one!
