Noodad: noodad » The Best Present for Father’s Day

  • Rob O. · 1 year ago
I got an incredibly nice framed black & white photo of my two favorite people in the world that'll be proudly displayed in my office.

But I also received a nifty "gift" from our local newspaper - an article about our adoption story. The reporter came out nearly a month ago to ask a flurry of questions. But then we figured the editors had decided it was not up to par or there wasn't space or whatever.

No, they just held the article until Father's Day. Wow. Just icing on the cake for an awesome day!

    Here's the article:

Rob, I can't agree on the sentiment of the article. In fact, I'm feeling a little ill after my first reading. I do not think you meant for this to happen to you; I am sure you had nothing but good intentions, but here is what I see:

Basically, the reporter has written a story about your third choice for having a kid.

I'm sickened they printed your donations and other "costs" in the story and that they rolled it up to a number. No kid deserves that.

I hope it is an article that Liam never reads.

    On a positive note:

I am glad that you are incorporating as much Russian culture into your family as you can. It is really great that you are open to embracing it and that you want Liam to understand his roots. These are now the roots of your family.

Adoption is awesome. It "injects" personality, emotions, hopes, goals and dreams into your family that would not have otherwise been there. Your family is taken in directions that it might not have otherwise gone and I hope that you will tell people about those things when they ask you about adoption. The more time you spend with Liam and once the novelty of "wow! I just adopted a kid from another country" wears off, you will see what I mean.

For my first Father's Day, I also received a nice framed photo of my wife and daughter. But also included in the book-style frame were my daughter's handprints in plaster! It was the perfect, unexpected present.

I got this awesome beach cooler from Pottery Barn (I think???) and the front pocket actually unzips to reveal two speakers and a place for your iPod. The speakers are boosted by 4 AA batteries. Pretty decent audio as well! But the coolest thing is that you know how places will monogram things for you with 3 letters? Instead of my three initials, my 5-year old thought it was obvious that the monogramming on the cooler should be "D-A-D"

Cold beverages, tunes and D-A-D....I'm set for a few years with that one! Thanks guys!
