I'm pregnant, and don't currently have any kids out in the world, but I'm "the favourite" of most kids I meet. Reason probably is that I haven't forgotten my childhood and my "genius" reputation, which I mostly added to from initiative opportunities.
I believe that every kid should have enough time for boredom, and figuring out what they would like to do in it. Most of the time, they never get bored, and voila, I become favourite for doing absolutely nothing.
The neighbour's kid had a phase when she used to cry to be allowed to visit me, and then used to plonk herself on the floor entertaining herself, barely looking to see if I was around, unless it came to showing off what she had done. I think I was her way of claiming some space for herself. It helps that I rarely direct anything she does - just make suggestions if they occur to me, and leave it at that. She learned to dance, draw, mimic my mother-in-law...... all on her own, with my duty being mostly limited to clapping and praise.
Her mom can't figure it out, I can't explain it that doing nothing is all I do to get this result.
